superscript and subscript#198

Why there is no option for superscript and subscript text? Isn’t the app supposed to be suitable for academic writing? There is a lot of text styling tools missing, or directly there are none

What are your use-cases for super/sub-scripts?

Hi, I’m very new to Butterdocs and am using it for collaborative scientific writing. Since Butterdocs already integrates with Zotero, I thought it would be ideal for academic work.

I agree that superscript and subscript formatting options are essential for scientific writing. Without these features, edits will need to be made later in Word - which is manageable, but adds extra steps during post-processing of the paper.

If these are coming, it would be great to know.

Hi Jon, do you need them for footnotes or do you have another use case? Footnotes are currently available (you can insert one and instead of choosing one from Zotero, type a custom text).

Hi Michi, sorry for the delay. These features are useful for footnotes - thanks for pointing it out.

In scientific writing - in my field (and many others) - superscript and subscript are commonly used to present information. For example:

Superscript is used for:

Mathematical/tests expressions and powers: x², 10⁻³

Units of measurement: cm³, m²

Chemical ions: Na⁺, Ca²⁺

Subscript is used for:

Chemical formulas: H₂O, CO₂, CH₄

Statistical notation: x₁, y₂, σ²

Indexing in mathematical and scientific contexts: T₁, Aₙ

Bayesian statistics (which I am using a lot): Bayes factors are typically reported with subscript notation, e.g. BF₁₀

Adding superscript and subscript support would improve Butterdocs for academic, scientific, and professional users. Although I fully appreciate this may not be a priroty - it would be a useful update :-)

Best wishes,
Jonathan
